The structure of the whole thing becomes apparent soon enough. We first meet Cindy Lou, Betty Jane, Missy and Suzy aka The Wonderettes at their 1958 Prom Night, performing a selection of girl-group classics in front of their fellow classmates. The girls have a leader because someone has to corral the egos. They have a rivalry because high school girls have been known to do that, and there’s a slightly tragic story of a girl who gets pregnant by a guy who is cheating on her already.  Thus the soundtrack covers the romantic highs (Sincerely;  It’s In His Kiss) and the bitter lows (It’s My Party; You Don’t Own Me). The quartet returns after intermission to pick up on their lives 10 years later, as reflected in the brightly colored miniskirts and go-go boots. An entertaining blast from the past, Wonderettes is everything that community theater should be: humorous, entertaining, and a chance to forget the real world for just a moment.
